Student Personal Electronic Device Policy

Includes cell phones, earbuds, bluetooth headphones, laptops, and tablets.

2025 - 2026 school year - see the Technology & Yondr agreement here

Dear Franklin Students and Families,

At Franklin High School, we recognize that personal electronic devices (cell phones, earbuds, smart watches) are an important part of our students' lives and can be used for various purposes such as communication, education, entertainment, and safety. However, we also believe that personal electronic devices used in the classroom can be a source of distraction, disruption, and disrespect; and personal electronic devices can sometimes interfere with our students’ learning process and our school climate. Therefore, we have established the following personal electronic device policy to balance the benefits and drawbacks of personal electronic device use at school.

  1. Students are not allowed to use personal electronic devices during school hours.  This includes texting, calling, browsing, gaming, social media, or any other activity that involves the use of a personal electronic device.
  2. Personal electronic devices must be stored away in a locked Yondr pouch all day. Before students enter the building they will need to show staff members that their personal electronic device is locked away in a Yondr pouch.
  3. Personal electronic devices must stay locked in a Yondr pouch while students walk in the hallways and go to the bathroom.
  4. Students may not use their personal electronic devices during the school day including lunch time.
  5. Parents can call the school office at (503) 916-5140 if there is an emergency and they need to reach their child. The office staff will relay the message to the student or the teacher as soon as possible. Do not call or text your child directly during class time as this will disrupt the learning environment.

If a student violates the personal electronic devices policy:

  1. A first violation will result in the personal electronic device being taken by a staff member and held in the office for the entire day (locked away in their Yondr pouch).  The student may pick up their personal electronic device and Yondr pouch in the VP office at the end of the school day.
  2. A second violation will result in the personal electronic device being held until a parent or guardian comes to school to pick it up. A call home from administration will be made to inform their parent or guardian of the violation.

Please note, due to extenuating circumstances, there will be a few exceptions to this new policy. We appreciate your cooperation and support in enforcing this personal electronic device policy. We believe that this policy will help us create a positive and productive learning environment for all our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Franklin Administration Team
